The traditional dances of Corpus Christi come to Xàbia this Sunday evening at 7.00pm when more than 200 schoolchildren join the dancers and musicians of Grup de Danses Portitxol and the Colla de Nanos to bring these rituals to the historic centre.

Dances such as the Paloteig, the Turcs, the Negrets, the Pastorets, the Magrana, the Panderetes, the Bastons and the Poloneses will be performed by the students of CEIP Graüll, CEIP Mediterrània, CEIP Trenc d’Alba and Colegio María Inmaculada who have been rehearsing for their big day for the past two months.

The Grup de Danses Portitxol will close the procession with the dance of Nanos and the dance of Moma, all accompanied by the music of the drum and the dulzaina, along the following route: Plaça de l’Esglesia, facing carrer Sant Bonaventura, Plaça dels Germans Segarra, carrer En Grenyó, carrer Virgen del Pilar, carrer En Forn, Placeta del Convent, carrer Metge González, carrer Mayor, Plaza Celestino Pons and returning to Plaza de l’Església.

This year, the group has restored the ‘big heads’ that represent the races known in the 15th century led by a captain who sets the patterns and rhythms of the dance. These special features turn 27 this year.

The Corpus Dances are an initiative organized by the Grup de Danses Portitxol, together with the municipal schools and the collaboration of the Department of Culture in Xàbia.

In addition, the celebrations for Corpus Christi extend to the neighborhood of Duanes de Mar, where the Parish of Nuestra Señora de Loreto organizes the Corpus Christi procession through the streets of the neighborhood, stopping at the altars located in Pio X, Calle Santísimo Cristo del Mar, Calle Sertorio, Calle Andrés Lambert, Calle Sevilla, Avenida Jaime I, Calle Virgen de Loreto, Calle Triana, Paseo Marina Española, Plaza Presidente Adolfo Suárez, Calle Caleta and Calle Churruca until returning to the church.
