CD Jávea have parted company with head coach Manuel Esteban after a run of seven successive defeats has all but ended the side’s promotion dreams with half the season still to play. Esteban was informed of the decision on Monday evening after a meeting of the club’s board of directors.
Esteban joined the club during the summer with the objective of guiding the side to one of the top positions and claiming a chance for promotion to the national system. The season began well with a winning run that saw the club top the table in October for the first time for many years. Unbeaten and with one of the best defences in the group, it seems that the objective would be met in some style. And then fortunes turned.
A home defeat to fellow promotion hopefuls UD Tavernes kicked off a run of seven games without victory, extending through November, December and now into January. The team appears to have fallen part, their last victory being way back in October. Even the distraction of a new regional cup competition – La Nostra Copa – which offered the winners a path into the Copa del Rey proved to be too familiar, a crushing 1-4 defeat at the hands of UD Calpe ending Jávea’s participation at the first attempt. And, to make things even worse reading, the club has recorded just one home win in seven games at the Campo d’Esports Municipal this season, a 4-1 win over CF LA Font d’Encarrós at the end of September.
Posting on his Facebook account, Esteban said that it is the first time that he has been dismissed as a coach. “I’m sure that I will learn from this and come back stronger. I can only wish the best for CD Jávea, to the previous directive headed by Tiscar and Soliveres, as well as the current board for ratifying me together with Boluda”. he also had words of respect for the players: “I have done my best and have used my time with the aim of being as professional as possible”.
Along with Esteban, his coaching team of Dani Fliguete, David Mira and Antonio José del Cid Saldaña have also been dismissed.
CD Jávea has confirmed that it is already speaking to a replacement which, should the talks prove agreeable to both parties, it is expected the new coach will be announced later today and will take his first training session with the first team squad this evening. His first game will be this Sunday 16th January, at home to CE Pedreguer, kick-off 4.30pm.
For many years, you’ve told us how much you love what we’re doing and some of you have even asked for ways to say thanks. For us, there really is nothing easier to show someone how much you appreciate their efforts than buying them a beer (or a wine; or even a coffee) – it’s so simple.
