FC Atletico Benidorm 0-2 CD Jávea
CD Jávea have moved into second place in the league table after a 2-0 defeat at FC Atletico Benidorm, condemning the hosts to their first defeat at home. The game was originally to be played back in December but was postponed due to the onset of the third wave of the pandemic. Now the rojiblancos have made up their games in hand to find themselves in second spot, just three points behind league leaders CFI Alicante.
Before this game, the new head coach at FC Atletico Benidorm, Carlos Romero, had guided the hosts to a five game unbeaten run to lift themselves off the bottom of the table.
The game (which was streamed on YouTube, a recording is linked below) began under grey skies with CD Jávea playing in its blue away strip. And the away side didn’t take long to score the opening goal, albeit in bizarre fashion, on 8 minutes. A chance from Alvaro right on the edge of the area was palmed onto the crossbar by the Benidorm keeper Dani Lussing, a former Jávea player, and the ball rebounded high and back into the box where Obele rose highest to head the ball down which bounced back up onto the underside of the bar and then, apparently, dropped over the line. Although keeper claimed the ball and rushed out to distribute it to his players, the linesman on the far side indicated the goal and it was given.
Jávea took control of the game although Atletico Benidorm has their fair share of opportunities but found themselves battling against a resilient defensive line. It was the away side who would do closest to scoring the next goal on 30 minutes when Obele might have done better to reach a low cross from Jorrín but the ball was well claimed by the keeper under pressure from the Jávea striker.
The second half was very much similar to the first with CD Jávea in charge and controlling the game. But they had to wait until the 72nd minute to double the advantage through leading scorer Guerrero who found himself in acres of space at the far post to meet a low cross from the left by Jorrín and simply side-foot into the net from a yard out, a simpler goal he may never score again for a while.
From that moment, the Benidorm side looked crestfallen and it was clear that they would have great difficulty in trying to claw themselves back into the game. And Obele might have put it beyond all hope late in the game but his shot went high over the crossbar. But the game was already won.
