Antonio Sart Catalá receives Premio Maurice Cheutin at the Xàbia Sports Gala

The annual Municipal Sports Gala was held in the Palau d’Esports Miguel Buigues Andrés last Friday, a special evening of recognition for Xàbia’s clubs and athletes who have achieved great success during 2023 at provincial, regional, national and international levels.

During the evening, Antonio Sart Catalá received the Premio Maurice Cheutin, a special award handed out by the Department of Sports in Xàbia in recognition of his work and dedication to sports in the municipality. Sart received the award from mayoress Rosa Cardona and the councillor responsible for Sports, Toni Molina, accompanied by Elena Buigues, niece of Maurice Cheutin, a career soldier and gymnastics teacher in the army who was born in Algeria but came to Xàbia in 1960 and became a very important person in the development of many sports disciplines that are practiced in the town these days. He died in 1986 when he was a sports technician in the local council.

They embarked on an expedition to the Himalayas. They had intended to do it in 2020, but they had to postpone it due to Covid and it was postponed to April of this year. They ascended two peaks of more than 5,000 metres and made the two most important treks in Nepal: Annapurna base camp and Everest base camp. They were only able to reach the first, since heavy snow and a strong blizzard frustrated the ascent to the second. Even so, they received recognition at the gala for their feat.

During the introduction of the event, which was presented by Daniela Buché and Ana Bisquert, the Councilor for Sports, Toni Molina, stressed that the gala united “the hearts and souls of the citizens, the athletes and all those who make it possible for our shine with sporting success.” Molina especially wanted to thank the work of all those who made the celebration of the gala possible, from the council staff to the members of the sports clubs, the state security forces and volunteers from the Protección Civil.

The event was closed by mayoress Rosa Cardona, who praised the work of the athletes for their successes and highlighted the fundamental role that families, coaches and clubs play in young athletes. Cardona also referred to the values that sport transmits in the education of the youngest.

The event concluded with a large family photo of all the athletes who were recognized.
