The municipal water company AMJASA has signed a consultancy contract with the Center Internacional de Mètodes Numèrics a l’Enginyeria (CIMNE) of the Universitat Politècnia de Catalunya to investigate the problem of flooding in the municipality .
The agreement, which for which some 14,000 euros has been allocated, will allow a technical diagnosis of the current situation to be made, with the definition of basins that provide runoff into the low-lying areas of the municipality in the event of rainfall, a definition of rainfall according to the records of the last 10 years, and a hydraulic analysis of the current situation.
In addition, CIMNE will look at potential actions which would reduce the volumes of flooding, especially in sensitive points such as Arenal, which includes possible retention tanks and pumping to reduce the time of flooding, in addition to other actions aimed at the maintenance and proper functioning of the proposed solution.
The technical manager of the contract is Professor Manuel Gómez Valentín, Professor of Hydraulic Engineering and with extensive experience in urban flooding issues. Gómez Valentín has already been in Xàbia to find out first-hand about the problems and the means of rainwater evacuation that are operational.
Xàbia Council has already invested in a consultancy project to try to solve another problem associated with heavy rains: the discharges that cause collapses of the sewerage network. It is a comprehensive study of the sanitation network for which 200,000 euros have been set aside in this year’s budget.
