What do the risk levels mean?

🟡 AEMET will issue a yellow warning when, although there is no risk to the general public, there is a risk for some specific activities, especially those outdoors, and advises that the public remains alert and stays informed of the most up-to-date weather forecasts. However, the issuance of such a warning does not mean that the situation will definitely happen but that there is an identifiable risk that it will do so.

🟠 An orange warning is issued when there is a significant risk of unusual weather phenomena with a certain degree of danger for usual activities, especially those outside, and the agency advises that the public be prepared and take the necessary precautions, whilst also staying informed of the most up-to-date weather forecasts.

Issued at 13:31 on Monday, November 11, 2024

1.-Meteorological phenomenon: Very strong to torrential rains and showers.
2.-Geographical area: Mediterranean coast and Balearic Islands
3.-Start of the situation: Tuesday 12th
4.-Duration: At least until Saturday 16th.
5.-Probability level: Very high (greater than 70%).
6.-Description of the meteorological situation: After a few days of stability, a cold air mass is expected to move from northern Europe towards the southwest in the next few days, isolating itself from the general circulation and reaching the Peninsula and the Balearic Islands starting tomorrow, Tuesday, causing a general drop in temperatures. This DANA (Isolated Depression at High Levels) will deepen, crossing the Iberian Peninsula from northeast to southwest, remaining in our environment at least until Saturday 16th. The increase in instability will be accompanied by the entry of a humid Mediterranean winds from the east, so it is likely that very strong and persistent precipitation will occur accompanied by storms and maritime storms in the Balearic Islands and the Mediterranean coastal regions, with the possibility of snow in the mountain systems in parts of the Cantabrian Sea and the centre of the peninsula. There is a wide uncertainty regarding the position of the low and, therefore, the distribution and amount of precipitation.

The rainfall in the Mediterranean area will begin tomorrow, Tuesday, with a greater probability
in the south of the Balearic archipelago, especially intense in Pitiusas and Mallorca, where it is likely to be locally very strong and persistent, with a possible accumulation of about 100 mm and extending to the first half of Wednesday. It is not ruled out in other points of the Mediterranean coast between Barcelona and Alicante, where it is likely to reach strong intensity. It is also likely that snow will occur in mountain areas of Cantabria and the north of the Pyrenees, with the altitude falling to about 1000 m. Very strong gusts of wind are also expected at high altitudes in the mountain systems of the northern half, with cold north winds in the Ebro valley and northern Catalonia, which will give rise to a coastal storm.

On Wednesday, very heavy rainfall is expected, with the probability of being locally torrential and even persistent in Malaga, with amounts that could exceed 180 mm, on the southern coast of Valencia and the northern coast of Alicante, where they could reach 100 mm. In addition, heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected, although torrential rainfall is not ruled out on the coast of Granada, the northern coast of Valencia, the coast of Castellón and the southern coast of Tarragona. Less intense rainfall is expected on the rest of the coast of Catalonia. The rainfall will be in the form of snow in the mountain systems at first, although the altitude will gradually rise, with snowfall restricted to high areas. Very strong gusts of wind will continue at high altitudes in mountain areas, most likely in the northwest quadrant, on the Mediterranean coast and on the Galician coast. These two days will see a general drop in temperatures, which will begin to recover at the end of Wednesday.

Uncertainty will increase from Thursday onwards. Locally heavy or very heavy rainfall is still expected, with the most likely areas being western Andalusia, the Mediterranean strip between the Ebro Delta and Cabo de la Nao, the centre of the peninsula and the southern slope of the Central System. In these areas, around 60-80mm could accumulate between Thursday and Saturday, with more than 120 mm locally. It is not ruled out that there may also be heavy and persistent rainfall in Murcia and the southern plateau. Temperatures will gradually recover, with a general and locally notable moderate rise on Thursday.

It is likely that from Saturday 16th, the rainfall will begin to lose intensity in the Mediterranean area and move to the Atlantic side and the extreme north-east of Catalonia, although there is a high level of uncertainty about the evolution of the episode.

AEMET will update this information and recommends detailed and up-to-date monitoring of this situation through its predictions and warnings of adverse weather phenomena at www.aemet.es.
