VIRUS UPDATE: Infection rate continues to drop in Xàbia

The total number of positive coronavirus cases detected by PCR test in Xàbia has risen by 6 to 1,507, according to the latest update from the regional health ministry. The number of cases detected in the past 14 days is 22, which means that the municipality’s 14-day IA rate, a measure of the speed at which the virus moves through the population, has also dropped to to 78.53 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, which means that the town remains in the ‘Medium Risk’ category. There have been no new deaths in Xàbia since late March and the number for remains at 12.

In the Marina Alta region, there have been 40 new positive cases detected in the past 14 days (of which Xàbia still accounts for more than half) whilst the total number of positive cases since the pandemic began has been confirmed as 10,151 since the last update, a rise of 10; Xàbia 6, Benissa 3 and one in Teulada. The region’s 14-day IA rate has dropped to 23.44 cases per 100,000 inhabitants and the region is in the ‘New Normal’ category. There have been no new deaths since the last update and the region’s toll remains 203.

Xàbia (78.53) and Pedreguer (50.75) are the only municipalities in the Marina Alta at the ‘Medium Risk’ level whilst two municipalities are in the ‘Low Risk’ category: Els Poblets (36.85) and Benissa (35.44). The rest of the municipalities in the region are at the ‘New Normal’ level, with 24 of them showing no infection spread over the last 14 days.

Spain

Spain’s 14-day IA rate is 110.35 cases per 100,000 inhabitants and the country remains in the ‘Medium Risk’ category. The rate has dropped by 12% in the past two weeks, whilst the Positivity Rate, the measure of how many coronavirus tests return positive, is 4.55%; a value of 5% or less indicates that transmission of the virus is more or less under control.

Across Spain, all autonomous regions and cities are now below the 200 mark for cases per 100,000. La Rioja leads the way (199.12) and it is joined by Andalucia and País Vasco at the ‘High Risk’ level. The Comunidad Valenciana (40.16) remains the region with the lowest rate of infection spread in the whole country and continues at the ‘Low Risk’ level along with Galicia (46.34), Ceuta (43.94) and the Baleares (40.97). But that rate is almost 25% higher than it was two weeks ago.

The newspaper El País has reported that Spain’s new traffic light system for COVID-19 restriction can be modified by regions as necessary. The system is to remain in place until 70% of the population and all over 50s have been vaccinated; measures include the restriction on the number of people allowed per table in a bar and restaurant terrace which must remain even if the region is in ‘Low Risk’.

Vaccination (10.06.21)

Spain has administered 31,628,321 doses of vaccine, which is 91.1% of those which it has already received. A total of 11,893,951 people have completed the recommended course, which is 29.6% of the total of the population which is to be vaccinated (40,129,822).

According to the latest data provided by the health authorities, 90.7% of people aged 50 and over in Spain have received at least one dose, with 43.1% having completed the recommended course.

The Comunidad Valenciana has administered 3,188,730 doses of vaccine, which is 90.1% of the total which it has received. A total of 1,180,744 people have completed the recommended course, which 27.9% of the population which is to be vaccinated (4,289,305).

According to the latest data provided by the health authorities, 89.2% of people aged 50 and over in the Comunidad Valenciana have received at least one dose, with 52.1% having completed the recommended course.

The newspaper El País has reported that Spain met a second major target in the vaccination campaign by immunizing 10 million people by the first week of June. As the fall in infection spreads continues to slow, health authorities are accelerating the vaccination of younger people who are now playing a key role in the spread of coronavirus across the country and every region is now scheduling slots for the 40-49 age group.
