Local police carry out speed checks on Avenida del Pla

The local police in Xàbia has been putting the speed radar equipment into use this week as part of a special awareness campaign to encourage drivers to reduce their speed in urban area, which coincides with the change to speed limits in urban area approved by the national government which came into force on Monday.
These new limits impose a maximum of 30 km/h on streets with one lane in each direction and 50 km/h on dual carriageway roads in urban zones, measures which have been implemented after studies showed that accidents on roads in these zones have increased as a whole. The new maximums aim to reduce the accident rate since it has been proven that driving at a lower speed will reduce to chance of injury to minor.
This Wednesday, the radar equipment was placed on Avenida del Pla and some drivers were caught exceeding the speed limit of 50 km/h for this road. However, the local police has claimed that it has been their intention to prevent speeding, not collect fines.
Still, there have been some drivers who have ignored the speed limit, including one that was recorded driving in excess of 110 km/h along this section of road. The driver will be charged appropriately for driving at over twice the maximum speed limit.
The local police explained that road safety should be a priority to reduce the number of accidents and, as proof that they were not out simply to catch out drivers and collect money from them, the limit set on the radar equipment to trigger the alarm on the first day of surveillance was between 70 and 80 kilometres per hour … yet, a dozen vehicles were stopped for exceeding that limit.
