The Department of Tourism in Xàbia has been working to find a definitive balance between tourism and sustainability in the town and have now come up with a list of the “Do’s and Don’ts of the Responsible Tourist” through which it will be appealing to the commitment of the visitor to respect the environment and the basic rules of coexistence to continue enjoying a quality lifestyle, responsible for the natural and cultural heritage of Xàbia.

Councillor Toni Miragall (Tourism) explained that the recommendations contained in the special document range from knowing the rules, habits and customs of the place to be visited to enjoying the natural resources with responsibility and respect, minimizing waste generation, respecting the peace of others, and supporting the local economy.

The document will be distributed through tourist rental companies, hotels, and tourist activity companies in pamphlet form and will be available in six languages (Valencian, Spanish, English, French, German and Dutch).

Larger versions of the document have also been printed for receptions and counters and there will be extra large copies to be placed in bus shelters and canopies, aimed at local people, those who have second residences in the town, and those who come to spend the day in Xàbia.

Mayor José Chulvi explained that “we all have to realize that we are in a place with a privileged environment and environmental wealth and that we have to do everything possible to keep it that way.”

He added that, although the campaign was initially created to deal with the problems related to the degradation suffered by the environment and the problems of co-existence, it also fits perfectly with the context of the health crisis of the past year, calling for respect of the rules of co-existence and the need more than ever for personal responsibility to overcome it.

“For months we have told the residents and businesses of Xàbia that it is essential that they respect the capacity, social distance and rules. Now we do it with the people who visit us. We welcome them with open arms but we need them to be aware that we are in a pandemic and that we cannot allow a sacrifice of months to be destroyed in a few days”.

The mayor also took the opportunity to announce that the Policía Local will be strengthening their surveillance and compliance with health protocols tasks over the next few weeks, coordinating with the Guardia Civil and Policía Autonómica.

In addition, the Protección Civil will be activating its forest surveillance teams for duty from this Friday until Monday 12th April, San Vicente. The Cruz Roja will also be in charge of surveillance and first aid on the Arenal beach during the weekends and on bank holidays.

Xàbia maintains its usual preventative protocols for Semana Santa, despite it being an atypical campaign, marked by the COVID-19 pandemic.
