News

As the virus continues to spread at a significant pace in the region, the Generalitat Valenciana has ruled out the possibility of another full lockdown … for the moment, although it would be a State decision to do so. But Health Minister Ana Barceló called on citizens to “stay at home” as much as possible, despite Podemos calling on a total home confinement of the whole Comunidad Valenciana.

With pressure on the regional health service increasing, the Ministry of Health has enabled field hospitals across the region to treat “non-serious” COVID-19 patients to free up beds in general hospitals. The provinces of Alicante and Castellón have 80 beds each in field hospitals whilst Valencia can count on 145. All infrastructure can be expanded if and when necessary.

The FFCV have suspended all competitive football at regional level until at least January 31st, stating that the organisation wants to show solidarity with the current situation in the Comunidad Valenciana. The association is also making all its resources (facilities and personnel) available to the Generalitat Valenciana to assist with the management of the virus.

News

A third wave of infections is gaining speed in Spain as the country recorded 61,422 new cases over the weekend, the largest increase reported on a Monday since the health crisis began. Fernando Simón, director of the Health Ministry’s Coordination Centre for Health Alerts (CCAES), admitted that further increases are expected in the coming days as the country starts to count the cost of the festive period: “We have perhaps had a better time than we could or should have done and now we have to cope with what is coming”.

But he dismissed suggestions that a new lockdown was imminent. “It was not necessary to control the second wave … if we behave with solidarity, if we administer the measures in an appropriate way, we will manage to control it“, highlighting the damage that a lockdown can have on the economy and on society in general.

However, Simón added that the effect of the restrictions imposed after the Three Kings should start to be seen next week and it is hoped that hospitals and particularly ICU wards will not become overwhelmed in the meantime. He predicted that a slowdown in the growth of new infections might be expected next week.

With regards to the UK variant of COVID-19, Simón reiterated that this new strain is not causing the significant increases in new infection but rather the behaviour of citizens, adding that “if we apply [the preventative measures] well, we will be able to control [the curve]”. At the moment, there are 70 confirmed cases of the new variant in Spain, with a further 72 people under investigation.

Data Explanation

1 The IA rate is the number of new cases of COVID-19 per 100,000 inhabitants over the past 14 days. It is considered the most accurate measure of the spread of the virus. A rate above 250 indicates an ‘Extreme Risk’ that the infection is spreading. The aim of the Spanish government is to lower this rate to 25.

2 The positivity rate refers to the percentage of all COVID-19 tests carried out which have come back positive. A high figure means that it doesn’t take many tests to come across a positive result.
