On Tuesday, the Generalitat Valenciana tightened restrictions across the region and confined 26 municipalities totally. Click here to read more.

The region is facing a particular difficult January as the latest details confirm that it now has the worst data in the whole country in terms of hospitalizations – over 35% of ICU beds are occupied by COVID-19 patients – and deaths over the past 7 days (135) as well as the worst positivity rate in Spain which, at almost 25%, is almost double the national figure.

There is controversy in the capital of the region after more than 1,500 people were allowed to gather to watch a parade of the Three Kings on the evening of January 5th, just hours after the Generalitat issued further measures to combat the spread of infection.

Podemos has called on the regional government to impose a total confinement of its citizens, promoting home-working and closing all the schools in the Comunidad Valenciana.

Coronavirus cases in Spain has officially passed the two million mark, with the Spanish Government warning that difficult weeks lie ahead as signs suggest that a ‘third wave’ of infections is imminent. With the media talking of a new home lockdown for the entire country, a spokesperson from the Health Ministry’s Coordination Centre for Health Alerts (CCAES) said that perimetral lockdowns and limits on social gatherings proved their effectiveness during the ‘second wave’ and that “there are many measures to take before a strict confinement“.

Spain is due to receive 600,000 doses of the US Moderna vaccine in the next 7 to 10 days. In total, the country will be receiving 140 million doses of vaccine, enough for 70 million people, almost twice the population of Spain. Health Minister Fernando Illa acknowledged that the vaccination campaign has been slow in some regions (Asturias has administered 100% of vaccines it has received whilst neighbouring Cantabria has just 5.1%) but remains confident that things will improve. “We are reaching a steady pace. Now we are going to receive new doses of the Pfizer vaccine, we are going to administer the Moderna vaccine and there are others that are being reviewed by the European Medicines Agency, so we believe that by summer we will be able to achieve the very significant figure of 70% of the population vaccinated.

A new poll has found that almost 60% of Spaniards believed that central and regional governments should have taken tougher measures to control the pandemic whilst just 2.1% think that restrictions have been unnecessary.

Data Explanation

1 The IA rate is the number of new cases of COVID-19 per 100,000 inhabitants over the past 14 days. It is considered the most accurate measure of the spread of the virus. A rate above 250 indicates an ‘Extreme Risk’ that the infection is spreading. The aim of the Spanish government is to lower this rate to 25.

2 The positivity rate refers to the percentage of all COVID-19 tests carried out which have come back positive. A high figure means that it doesn’t take many tests to come across a positive result.
