Comunidad Valenciana
The 14-day cumulative rate stands at 171.01, an 11.65% increase on the last available figures, but it remains the lowest rate for any autonomous region on the mainland with only the Balearic Islands (170.42) and the Canary Islands (77.41) in a better position.
That said, the Valencian region has broken the 9,000 mark for active cases for the first time since the crisis began – it now stands at 9,130 but reached almost 9,600 on Friday – and, for the first time since mid April, more than 1,000 people are currently hospitalized with 137 in intensive care, the highest total since April 26th.
New infections are rising in all but one of the 24 health authorities in the Valencian region with Gandía, Alcoi and Dénia all recording significant rises in their 14-day rates.
On Saturday president Ximo Puig announced a series of new measures to combat the accelerating rise of infections in the region which includes a night-time curfew starting at midnight and continuing through to 6.00am the following day amongst other restrictions. After the announcement of the national ‘state of alarm’ on Sunday, it was confirmed that this period will remain, as authorized by the emergency decree.
Spain
After a dramatic weekend in which night-time curfews were established across the nation, the latest figures show that the infection continues to spread across the population with the national 14-day cumulative infection rate reaching 410.18 new infections per 100.000 people. up 13.42% on the previous available data.
Whilst the Partido Popular supports the ‘state of alarm‘ approved on Sunday, its leader Pablo Casado has said that such support would only continue if the emergency state lasted no longer than eight weeks, not the “excessive” six months that the Spanish Government has proposed. He added that the government must prepare a “legal Plan B” by December, legal reform that would allow restrictions on movement to be approved without the need to maintain a state of emergency.
According the new figures released by the Ministry of Health on Monday night, Cataluña leads the way with a 30.65% rise in their 14-day cumulative infection rate and the regional government has imposed the earliest start to a night-time curfew in the country, requiring residents to leave the streets at 10.00pm whilst shops must close by 9.00pm. Bars and restaurants have already closed and the regional government is already considering an option to confine residents in their homes during the weekends.
Aragón sealed its regional borders overnight and they will remain closed for 15 days as the region continues to recorded the third-highest 14-day rate after Navarre and the African enclave of Melilla. That rate has increased by 20.26% over the weekend but regional leaders have ruled out the possibility of weekend home confinements.
Asturias once had the lowest infection rate in Spain but has now been forced to close its borders to avoid its hospitals reaching saturation point as its 14-day rate rose by almost 10% over the weekend. The cities of Oviedo, Gijón and Avilés are also in local confinement until November 7th.
Galicia has seen its 14-day rate rise by almost 18% over the weekend and socializing with people outside of the household has been prohibited in the city of Santiago de Compostela and nearby town of O Milladoiro whilst Ourense and Barbadàs continue under perimetral confinement and have been joined by Verín, Oímbra and Vilardevós.
Navarra continues to own the highest 14-day rate in the country at 1,062.80 new infections per 100,000 of population but the rate increase appears to be slowing, rising just 3.71% over the weekend. The regional government has already closed its borders and is considering even more restrictions to start reducing the infection rate.
Both Madrid and the Canary Islands have seen their 14-day rate drop slightly over the weekend. The former has just emerged from its own ‘state of alarm’ to be placed in a national one and the regional government is considering perimetral confinement of particular healthcare areas to continue to fight the infection spread, restricting the movement of people in and out of these areas except for justified reasons.
