Photo Gallery: Xàbia honours Santa Llúcia in the last traditional fiesta of the year
The fiesta involved the traditional ascent to the top of the hill of Santa Llúcia for a mass in the old chapel.
On Friday 13th December, Xàbia celebrated the fiesta of Santa Llúcia, the last traditional celebration of the year and one of the oldest festivity to be observed in the town.
After the informal parade around the historic centre on the previous evening, the festeros offering sponge cake and mistela to the neighbours and curious onlookers, the main event took place on the morning of December 13th with the traditional ascent of the hill of Santa Llúcia, some 163m high, to the old chapel of the same name.
Those who made the effort were rewarded with hot chocolate, a tasty bun and some fabulous views of the Montgó, the valley and the town; the weather was so clear that the island of Ibiza could also be seen on the horizon to the east.
After a mass inside the small chapel during which the 2025 mayorales were announced (Elena Reduán, Lucía Bas, Juan Ramón Sapena, Patricia Peiró, Lourdes del Toro, Paula Català, Lucía Català, Clara Bas, Marina Bas, Laura Gavilà, Martina Ferrer, Antonio Ferrer, Tere Beneito, Toñi Fornés, Silvia Montaner, Cati Vives, Vicente Caballero, Jaime Buigues, Victoria Chorro, Billy Vivas, Carolina Marín, Francisco Marín, Pilar Miralles, Lucía Cruañes, Lucía Andrés Lacuvea, Clara Buigues, Alba Carrió, Eduardo Miralles, Ángela Bolufer and María Berenguer), the images of Santa Llúcia and Santa Barbara were carried on the shoulders of the current mayorales along the path that circles around the chapel.
