With twenty-six years behind it, the ‘Living Chess of Xàbia’ – Escacs Vivents de Xàbia – has become a cultural event that reaffirms its title of Festival of National Tourist Interest. The annual performance led by the Comissión de Festes Mare de Déu de Loreto is a show that combines live music performed by the Xàbia Symphony Orchestra with the dance and drama of more than 30 schoolchildren who play the pieces of a chess board as well as telling the stories that the performance delves into each year.

After more than two decades of constant growth, the Comissión de Festes is taking a step towards consolidating the work carried out by the young people who play the role of the game and has created a ‘Living Chess School’ – L’Escoleta dels Escacs Vivents – a theatre school that, throughout the year, will seek to strengthen the commendable work of its young actors and actresses.

The initiative had been pondered the fiesta commitee for some time, aware that a month of rehearsals is not enough for youngsters to acquire all the skills, resources and greater stage resolution to face the exciting performance in July. Thus, participants in this theatre school will be able to increase their creativity and develop theatre and interpretation, dance, psychomotor skills and vocal technique among others, counting on professionals from each field. In addition, this proposal will serve to designate the cast of the next edition of Living Chess.

The school is open to all those born between 2009 and 2017. One session will be held per month on either a Friday afternoon or Saturday morning, depending on the availability of the teachers. The dynamics will begin during the Christmas holidays. Participation in these sessions costs 30 euros per year.

All those interested can register on Monday 9th and Tuesday 10th December from 5.30pm to 6.30pm at the Casal de la Comissió de Festes in Calle Severo Ochoa in Duanes de la Mar. To formalise the registration, a photocopy of the DNI and SIP of the child and a photocopy of the DNI of their legal guardians will be required.
