Montañar 1 environmental restoration project begins its first phase

The project entitled “environmental restoration of the section of Primer Montañar between the right bank of the Gorgos River and the Parador de Xàbia” has begun its first phase, marking the start of a key action for the revitalization of the natural environment and the improvement of the coastal ecosystem of Xàbia.

Developed by the Alicante Provincial Coastal Service (“Costas”), in collaboration with Xàbia Council, it is one of the first investments in the first line of Xàbia with the intention of tackling the adjacent road next year in a project included in the budgets of the Generalitat Valenciana.

Mayor of Xàbia, Rosa Cardona, highlighted the importance of this projects, which responds to a historical demand from the citizens. “This project is essential to recover and preserve a coastal space so important for our town, which has been the subject of numerous requests from residents. In recent months, we have held several meetings with “Costas” to ensure that this work is not just another project [on the drawing board] but [becomes] a reality and that it is carried out in the best possible way, respecting the environment and improving its accessibility and safety“.

She added that his recovery action will not only allow the splendour of this coastal strip to be restored, but will also promote a more respectful and sustainable use by residents and visitors whilst also facilitating safer and more comfortable access to the coast.

The main actions of the project include:

• Surface cleaning of the area to remove plastics, papers, construction waste and other waste.
• Extraction of the anthropic soil (environmental degradation caused by human beings) and transfer of the materials to authorized landfills.
• Elimination of invasive vegetation (such as reeds and canes).
• Demolition of a concrete wall in a specific section.
• Archaeological recovery of three quarry fronts of great historical value.
• Creation of six pedestrian routes that will facilitate archaeological observation.
• Installation of ecological fences to protect areas of endemic flora and slopes.
• Creation of shaded areas with wooden pergolas, benches and waste bins at strategic points.
• Placement of explanatory signs to enrich the experience of visitors both on the archaeological path and at the viewing points.

The project will be developed in two phases, starting with the northern section, the contract for which has been awarded to the Grupo TRAGSA for 333,763.53 euros. It is estimated that the work in this phase will be completed within three months.
