AEMET issues warning for potential for heavy rain and storms on Wednesday

The Spanish State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has issued an YELLOW risk alert for the potential for heavy rain and an ORANGE risk alert for storms on Wednesday 14th August. For the zone defined as ‘Litoral Norte de Alicante’ which includes Jávea and Dénia, the risk period starts at 6.00am and continues through to midnight on the same day, with a 40%-70% probability for heavy rainfall falling at a rate of 30mm per hour at times, possibly at 40mm per hour, which could be accompanied by hail and strong gusts of wind.

The warning has been issued after forecasts that an Atlantic trough passing over the Iberian Peninsula over the next few days could become detached and form a weather phenomenon known as a DANA, an “Isolated Depression at High Altitude”, which, despite popular belief, should not be associated with torrential rain but does have certain risks of heavy precipitation.

This situation will result in rain and storms spreading across a good part of the Peninsula and in our region, there could be locally strong stormy showers on Wednesday and Thursday. Although things could change over the next 24-36 hours, it is expected that it will rain very heavily across parts of the Mediterranean coast and in the Balearic Islands. Maximum temperatures will also drop, a small relief that will last a few days.
