Improvements to the Arenal outfall system were discussed as well as to the wastewater treatment plant.

Xàbia mayor Rosa Cardona has held a working meeting with José Aparicio, the manager of EPSAR, the public agency for wastewater treatment, to consider an exhaustive analysis of the facilities of the outfall pumping station (EBAR) in the Arenal amongst other subjects.

During the meeting, improvements to the facilities of the EBAR sanitation and purification system that will be implemented over the coming months were discussed, measures that include:

  1. Replacement of Submersible Pumps: a proposal to replace the three current submersible pumps which drive the Arenal underwater outfall with new pumps that have a non-clog N-type impeller as well as the implementation of an anti-jamming system to anticipate and detect problems due to partial blockages with the ability to stop the pump or reverse the direction to help the unclogging process.
  2. Infrastructure Improvements: the replacement of the metal door to access the space where the waste conveyor-compactor screw screen is located due to its lack of tightness as well as replacement of the metal covers of the pump wells, which have become corroded, with covers made of glass reinforced plastic (GRP) to guarantee tightness.
  3. Monitoring and Security: to provide the Arenal EBAR with its own equipment to monitor operation in real-time as well as to create an anti-vandalism enclosure to protect the facilities.

The EPSAR manager also confirmed that the specifications for the project to expand the Xàbia waterwater treatment plant (WWTP) have been finalised and are expected to be published in September, which will lead to the development of the WWTP into a tertiary system with the total reuse of water.

The mayor also confirmed that the maintenance work on the storm drains and sewers will begin next week in anticipation of the storms which are usual at the end of summer whilst also highlighting the need to maintain good coordination between administrations.
