Residents recycled an average of 60 kilos of glass containers in 2023.

Xàbia Council and more than 154 hospitality venues in the town will be competing during the summer to claim the Bandera Verde symbol of sustainability awarded by EcoVidrio, the non-profit entity responsible for managing the recycling of all glass packaging waste in Spain.

This is the fifth edition of EcoVidrio’s #MovimientoBanderasVerdes, it’s renowned summer campaign that aims to highlight and recognize the commitment of the local hospitality industry and the municipalities in the recycling of glass containers, environmental protection and progress towards sustainable development.

Xàbia will be competing with some 40 Valencian municipalities to win EcoVidrio’s “Green Flag of Sustainability”, an award that was claimed by L’Alfas del Pi and Finestrat during the last edition.

EcoVidro regional manager in the Comunidad Valenciana, Roberto Fuentes, met with the councillor responsible for Services, Juanjo García, and the councillor responsible for the Environment, Juanlu Cardona, in order to formalise the municipality’s participation in the competition.

Fuentes highlighted the fact that residents in Xàbia recycled an average of 60 kilos of glass containers in 2023, which is a significant amount considering that the average across the Comunidad Valenciana is 18 kilos per inhabitant a year.

Councillor Cardona also highlighted the importance of recycling from home and praised the efforts of residents who take their glass container waste to the different collection points – Punts Verds – that are located throughout the municipality as well as the hospitality sector which is “one hundred per cent committed to recycling” as demonstrated by the number of establishments which have joined the campaign.

The Bandera Verde Movement

The Bandera Verde Movement is an annual campaign run every summer which responds to the high use of glass containers in the coastal areas of Spain, which accounts for a third of all such containers put into circulation, of which 50% of such waste is generated of the hospitality sector. Aware of the need to support the hospitality sector, EcoVidro will provided a team of environmental educators to provide means, information and incentives to the HORECA sector on the Spanish coast.
