A valuable point at Dénia. It was an dull stalemate, the boredom punctuated only by Tonet’s great penalty save from former rojiblanco Panucci and Dénia finding themselves reduced to ten men after another former rojiblancos Paco was dismissed five minutes before the break for picking up a second caution, his ninth yellow card in just 11 games.

Head coach Julio Ivorra will need to lift his team again for this Saturday’s home game against CD Eldense “B”, the third of a vital second half of the season when the rojiblancos will need to play like they did in the second half of last season. This is essentially the same team, with one or two absences, which has the potential to be much higher up the table that they currently are.

But they need to start finding the back of the net again; only 13 goals in 17 games is a giant statistical weight that’s dragging the club down. Last season’s top scorer José Cabo hasn’t scored since the start of October and two of his three goals came on the first day of the season. Pitu has great potential but also hasn’t found the back of the net since mid-November. Young striker Mario should have more than his two goals but needs more experience. You can’t fault his enthusiasm though; he had to come off against Crevillente Deportivo, the game in which he scored the winner, because he simply ran himself into the ground. More goals please.

Three points adrift of safety, the players will know that the three clubs above them have potentially difficult games this weekend. Callosa Deportiva’s six game losing streak has seen them crash from a comfortable mid-table position to 15th and are only kept off the bottom of the table on the strength of their better goal difference. In 14th spot, Santa Pola CF have lost three of their last four games and face a difficult trip to Xàtiva whilst CD Thader host runaway leaders CF Benidorm who have won their last eight games and have a nine point cushion at the top of the table. A win for CD Jávea could see them rise out of the bottom three for the first time this season and this could be a boost for the rest of the season.

THE OPPOSITION

CD Eldense “B” are the reserve side of CD Eldense which currently plays in the Segunda División, the second tier of the Spanish football pyramid. Formed in 1921 in Elda, it is one of the oldest football club in the Comunidad Valenciana and it has played much of its competitive football in the national system at either Tercera División or Segunda División ‘B’ level. Winning promotion at the end of the 2022-23 season means that it is playing in the second tier for the first time since the early 60s.

A “B” team entered competitive football in the mid 1990s, playing in the Segunda Regional of the FFCV. The current version of the reserve side was formally registered in 2017 and spent four seasons at Segunda Regional before winning promotion at the end of the 2020-21 season when, despite having finished champions, they still have to enter the lottery of the play-off system.

They spent just one season at Primera Regional, winning promotion at the first attempt to the top league of the regional football in the Comunidad Valenciana. Finishing fourth in Group IV at the end of the 2022-23 season qualified the club to enter the following season as founder members of the newly formed Lliga Comunitat.

There is a “C” team which currently plays in the Segona FFCV, the third tier of regional football.
