Officers from the Policía Local de Xàbia have carried out specialist training in the detection of drivers who are under the influence of drugs. The course, organised by the local council, provided the information for the officers to carry out effective drug tests and initiate sanction procedures for behaviour which poses a risk to road safety. The 25-hour course also included a drill in which the police canine unit was involved.
The councillor responsible for Public Security in Xàbia, Juan Ortolá, took part in the end of course ceremony to deliver certificates to the officers who obtained the accreditation.
In Spain, drivers who give a positive test result may face a fine up to 1,000 euros and the loss of six points from their driving licence. Although people have become more aware that drinking alcohol is incompatible with safe driving, there has been a steady increase in the use of drugs by drivers, with cannabis and cocaine being the most prevalent.
