Xàbia Folk 2022 has its first appointment this week. On Friday 22nd April at 8.00pm, the Casa de Cultura will host the inaugural concert for this 20th anniversary season, an exquisite journey through various sounds courtesy of EIXA, who will present their latest album “Invisibles”.
EIXA is a group led by the versatile Valencian composer, Isabel Latorre, who fuses Mediterranean folk with early music, jazz and other experimental languages. In Xàbia, the group will perform as a quartet (Isabel Latorre: voice, piano, accordion; Gloria Aleza: voice, cello, viella and nyckelharpa; Alfonso del Corral: guitar, lapsteel guitar and lute; and Esteban Rodrigo: percussion).
Their latest album, Invisibles, is inspired by the text of Italo Calvino’s ‘Las Ciudades Invisibles’, which links the show with literature. Themes created from poems by José Agustín Goytisolo or Carmelina Sánchez-Cutillas are also included.
The performance has free access and closes the presentation phase of the popular folk festival which will take place over the weekend of May 13th to 15th, which this year has the prestigious piper Carlos Núñez as headliner, who will share the stage with the Colla La Xafigà de Muro d’Alcoi, as well as performances from Kurdish Gani Mirzo and his project “La Ruta de la Dignidad“, committed to refugees fleeing the war (a significant part of his fee will be donated to the refugees from Duhok), a sadly topical situation now also in Europe.
The festival will close as usual with an intimate performance at the chapel of Santa Llúcia on top of the hill of the same which overlooks the town and this year stars Carol Duran and Nuria Lozano, two fundamental artists in the creation and composition of Catalan music.
