Xàbia suspends its traditional New Year midday bells due to increase in infections
The decision has been taken due to the rapid rise in positive cases of COVID-19 in the municipality.

The recently established tradition of celebrating the New Year’s Eve chimes in advance in Xàbia will not take place as scheduled. The Department of Economic Development and the Xàbia Histórica merchants association have agreed to suspend the family year-end celebration that was scheduled for this coming Friday 31st December at 12 noon in Plaça de l’Esglèsia.
The reason is simple and obvious: the current health situation that the population is experiencing with a high incidence of infections – the current 14-day IA rate is over 1,100 new cases per 100,000 population – makes it inadvisable to encourage large gatherings. Thus, and as a preventive measure, the organization has chosen to cancel this fiesta, considering that it may entail a risk of concentration of people and that to eat the traditional twelves grapes, it would be necessary to remove the mask.
The rest of the children’s programming planned for the festive period, including the collection of letters in the three urban centres and the Three Kings parade, are still on.
