Xàbia seeks to gain Ecovidrio Green Flag status this summer
The campaign rewards the recycling efforts of the hospitality sector.

Xàbia Council has confirmed that the town will be participating in the new “Banderas Verdes” campaign launched by Ecovidrio, a non-profit entity in charge of managing the recycling of glass bottles and other packaging in Spain.
The campaign aims to reward the efforts of the local hospitality sector and the efforts of coastal municipal municipalities to transition towards green initiatives. In the Comunidad Valenciana, some 39 municipalities will be taking part, including Xàbia and 100 of the hospitality venues in the town.
The challenge is to increase the levels of selective collection of glass containers and mobilize the hospitality sector to snatch the ‘Green Flag’ from Dénia and Benidorm, the winners of the last edition.
The ‘Green Flag’ has the uniqueness of involving not only the local councils but also restaurants, bars, beach bars and catering establishments in general. It is a campaign that aims to raise the awareness of the importance of recycling and the separation and selective collection of glass containers. The hospitality sector generates 52% of single-use glass container waste so it really is the key to generating real transition towards the circular economic model.
In order to make it easier to all participating businesses to contribute, Ecovidrio will be installing new containers to them, free of charge, to help with the transport of their glass container waste for disposal. A team will be deployed throughout the region to visit the businesses and information them about the campaign and encourage participation. In addition, it will carry out a daily monitoring of the collection bins to adapt the collections routes if necessary.
The recycling of glass in Xàbia
During 2020, residents of Xàbia recycled 1,469,584 kilos of glass container waste, which represents an average of 52.5 kg per resident. With more than 241 collection igloos around the town, there is one bin for every 116 inhabitants.
